Vorarlberg Museum Kinder App

A hand-drawn web app that lets children explore the Vorarlberg Museum through play. Designed to turn exhibitions into interactive stories — in the museum and online.

A digital museum experience made for children

The Vorarlberg Museum Kids App was created for children who learn by exploring, not by reading instructions. It is used both inside the museum and online, extending the exhibition experience beyond the physical space. The app exists to make cultural content approachable, engaging, and meaningful for young visitors. Instead of adapting adult content, it was designed from the ground up for children. Berta and Bert guide them through the museum, turning exhibitions into playful challenges and small discoveries. The app solves a common problem museums face: how to engage children without oversimplifying content. By combining storytelling, interaction, and play, the Kids App creates an experience that feels natural to children while staying closely connected to real exhibitions.

UX & UI Design

The UX and UI were designed specifically for children, with a strong focus on clarity and confidence. Hand-drawn illustrations create warmth and character, making the app feel friendly and inviting from the first interaction. Navigation follows a simple, predictable structure so children can move independently without guidance. Visual storytelling replaces long texts, allowing kids to understand content intuitively. Berta and Bert act as familiar companions, guiding users through games and experiences while creating emotional connection. Complexity was reduced by focusing on recognition instead of explanation. Every interaction has a clear response. Every screen has a purpose. The result is a calm, playful interface that encourages curiosity without overwhelming young users.

The app was implemented as a web-based game experience using React, with development handled by the implementation partner NetEngine.
